Fellowship overview
Cornell University’s Institute for Comparative Modernities (ICM) invites applications from translators for a grant of up to $5000 to accomplish translations of works from the Global South (Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, etc.) into English. Within this fellowship, the recipients will complete the work outside of Cornell University_ in a remote fellowship. It is a great opportunity for those established translators who love to be engaged in and work on scholarly projects.

What will the project include?
Works under the fellowship project may be retranslations of old, classic writings, or previously untranslated works, collections of poetry, prose, or critical theory. Also, the project may be a work-in-process or a new project manageable within the range of the award.
With stress on developments outside the historical West, it fosters the study of artistic, intellectual, and social movements attending modern formations. You can read ICM’s publication’s here.
Grant amount
The institute will offer fellows awards that will range from $1000 to $5000, depending upon the project’s scope.

Mandatory documents
Applications must include:
- A two-page CV/résumé including institutional relationship, educational credentials, including highest degree earned, and key publications/works produced
- A two-page narrative describing the translation to be carried out during the fellowship timeframe, a rationale for the work’s importance, a justification for a re-translation, if applicable, and planned completion dates.
* ICM assumes completion of the translations by the end of the 2021 calendar year.
- A four-five page (double-spaced) example of the original text(s) and translation.
- A description of the translation’s copyright status: If the work is not in the public domain, please attach a copy of the copyright permission from the original text and a letter from the copyright holder stating that English language rights to the work are in place.
Assessment
The ICM board will evaluate the applications. Decisions will be made based on the quality of the proposed project, the established potential of the applicant to complete the project, and the project’s conformance with ICM’s priorities.
