Opportunity Description

The World Trade Organization Essay Award applications are now open to young international economists for 2023. The award is to strengthen ties between the academic community and the World Trade Organization (WTO) while fostering top-notch research on international trade cooperation and trade policy.

The WTO Essay Award is an annual event that provides a CHF 5,000 prize to the author(s) of the winning essay. If the writers have co-authored a paper, WTO will divide the prize amount equally among the authors. WTO will officially announce the winning paper at the annual meeting of the ETSG (European Trade Study Group), the largest conference on international trade.

For the current year, the Award ceremony will take place at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom on 14-16 September 2023. Please note that the winning author will receive funding to attend the meeting.

About World Trade Organization (WTO)

As an intergovernmental organization, the World Trade Organization (WTO) regulates and facilitates international trade and deals. With the help of practical cooperation in the United Nations System, countries’ governments use the organization to establish, review, and enforce the rules that govern international trade.

WTO officially started its operations on 1 January 1995, and currently, it is the world’s largest international economic organization. WTO has 164 member states representing over 98% of global trade and global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Benefits of the World Trade Organization Essay Award

By submitting a paper for the World Trade Organization (WTO) Essay Award, authors will benefit from the event as follows:

  • The WTO Essay Award is an annual event that provides a CHF 5,000 prize to the author(s) of the winning essay. If the writers have co-authored a paper, WTO will divide the prize equally among the authors.
  • WTO will officially announce the winning paper at the European Trade Study Group (ETSG) annual meeting, which is the largest conference on international trade.
  • The winning author of a paper will receive funding to attend the meeting.

Eligibility for the World Trade Organization Essay Award

Applicants must fulfil the following criteria to be eligible for the current year WTO Essay Award:

  • The topic of the essay must be trading policy and global trade cooperation.
  • The author(s) of the manuscript must hold a Ph.D. or be working toward one; if over 30, they must not have completed their Ph.D. defence more than two years ago. This criterion must apply to all authors of co-authored.
  • Essays must be at most 15,000 words to be eligible for the prize.

  • CV of the author(s), including information on their present affiliation(s), an academic institution where they received their Ph.D., year (or anticipated year) of graduation, and birthdate (s)
