The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Offers Up to 166 scholarships annually. This Scholarship is open to Canadian Citizens, International students, and Permanent residents of Canada.

Established in 2008, the Scholarship strengthens the ability of Canada to attract and retain excellent doctoral students and make Canada a global center of excellence in higher education and research.

Who is Eligible to apply for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships?

The following students are eligible to apply for this Scholarship:

  • Applicants can be Canadian or Foreign Citizens or permanent residents of Canada
  • Be nominated by only one Canadian institution that must have received a Vanier CGS quota
  • Start the first doctoral studies, including joint programs such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D., MBA/Ph.D.
  • Intend to pursue their full-time doctoral study in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of the results
  • Candidates must have completed no more than 32 months of their full-time study in a doctoral program by 01 May 2024 if:
  • Enrolled in a joint graduate research program
  • Registered directly from a bachelor’s to a Ph.D. program
  • Previously enrolled in a master’s program without obtaining the degree and transferring to a doctoral program
  • Have completed not more than 20 months of their doctoral studies as of 1 May 2024 if the doctoral program would start after a master’s degree
  • They have achieved a first-class average accredited by their institution in the last two years of full-time study or equivalent.
  • To start or complete a doctoral program, applicants should not be previous doctoral-level Scholarship or fellowship recipients from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.

  • A ResearchNet application form(consists of two letters of reference, each with three sections)

  • Research Contributions(maximum one page)
  • A Personal Leadership Statement(full two pages)
  • Special Circumstances (max 0.5 pages, optional)
  • Two Leadership letters of reference(full two pages)
  • A Research Proposal (Full two pages)
  • Project References(Full five pages)
  • Transcripts
