The University of Tasmania Scholarships applications are open to international Master’s and Ph.D. applicants for 2024. The univeristy mainly offers two types of Major Scholarships in addition to other opportunities, including the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships and the Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) to both domestic and international students wishing to pursue a research degree at master and Ph.D. level in Australia.

There are scholarships which cover a part or all the following costs for students:

  • Lving stipend
  • Tuition fees
  • Relocation allowance

UTAS Scholarships are awarded competitively based on academic excellence, experience, prior learning, and other relevant achievements.

Types of Scholarships

UTAS provides several scholarship programs for national and international applicants. Students can check specific details for each in this link. But the two Major Scholarships available at UTAS as below:

  1. Australian Government Research Training program (RTP) Scholarships

UTAS awards these scholarships competitively to students of outstanding research potential to help in coverage of living expenses while undertaking a Higher Degree by Research (HDR).

  1. Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarships

These are available across all research disciplines at the University of Tasmania and will be awarded to applicants with exceptional research competency.

Benefits of Both Scholarships

The Univeristy of Tasmania RTP and TGRP scholarships cover the following costs:

Living Allowance:

Both scholarships provide a living allowance of AUD 31,500 per year (2023 rate).

Relocation Allowance:

The RTP Allowance can assist with costs relating to relocating to Tasmania to commence a Higher Degree by Research up to AUD 2,000.

Important Notes About Tuition Fees and Costs for International Students:
  • Unless a Tuition Fee Scholarship has been granted, international HDR candidates will have to pay tuition fees for the duration of their research course. International candidates pay an annual fee. Please see here for information on tuition fees.
  • The Department of Home Affairs will ask an evidence that applicants for a student visa have sufficient amount to complete their studies.
  • International applicants should consider the following expenses before applying:
  1. HDR tuition fees
  2. Visa and medical (pre-departure) fees
  3. General living expenses
  4. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
  5. Return airfares

Note on Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC):

International applicants can request the UTAS provide a quote for Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) as part of the application process. The standard costs for the different levels of cover are as follows:

Eligibility Criteria for University of Tasmania Scholarships

To be eligible for an RTP Stipend, and RTP Allowance, a candidate must:

  • Be either a domestic or a foreign candidate enrolled in an accredited Higher Degree by Research degree at the University.
  • More specifically, to be eligible for an RTP Stipend, candidates must not be receiving an equivalent award, scholarship or salary to pursue the proposed program or income from another source to support the candidate’s general living expenses while undertaking their Higher Degree By Research if that income is more than 75% of the candidate’s RTP Stipend rate. Income unrelated to the candidate’s current degree (e.g., employment income) or income received for the candidate’s ongoing academic degree but not for the purposes of supporting general living costs is an exception to the above case.
  • RTP Scholarship students should accept and commence by the dates stated in their letter of offer.
  • The period of support of an RTP Scholarship is always subject to the scholar’s satisfactory academic improvement and terminates on the expiry of the Award or on submission of the thesis for examination, whichever is the sooner.

In particular, the criteria for TGRS are:

  • Completed at least four years of tertiary education studies and have earned at least an upper second class Honors degree or equivalent
  • Awards are only available to those who have enrolled in a full-time research Masters or Doctoral degree in 2023.
  • Candidates who have completed a degree at the same level as the proposed candidature, or at a higher level; and/or held an Australian Government or University funded Postgraduate Research Award for over six months are eligible to apply and will be considered in the competitive selection process but will not win leverage over other applicants who have not.

Proof of English Language

By providing official test scores for one of the following tests applicants can incrase thier chance for acceptance:

UTAS Access Level 7 English Language Training (must be completed prior to applying for HDR) 65 Minimum 65 for writing and 65 for speaking and no other test score less than 60

If you are a citizen of and hold a passport from one of the following countries, you don’t need to provide English language score. Alternativly, applicants can provide evidence of ongoing residence and employment for a period of at least 5 years within one of the following countries don’t need to provide English language score:

  • Certified copies of transcripts and degree certificates for ALL previous university studies, complete and incomplete.
  • One copy of research thesis from your Honours or Masters degree (if applicable)

How to Apply for University of Tasmania Scholarships?

Applicants should complete an online application in association with their supervisory team from the University.

Before starting to apply, applicants should consider the following steps to completely prepare their applications to be considerable:

Step 1: Before you start check all criteria and eligiblity, scholarships availablity and fees, available projects, and associated costs.

Step 2: Find a project and choose ONE project that aligns with your research experience and interests. Please check all the details.

Step 3: Submit an application by gathering all the required documents.

Step 4: Wait for a response and outcome of your application. After evaluation, the Graduate Research Office will advise you of the outcome of your application by email.

Step 5: If your application is success, international candidates have eight weeks to accept or decline an offer of candidature or scholarship, and six months to commence their candidature.
