Program overview

The United Nations University Office of the Rector hires highly qualified candidates to work as Junior Fellows at the UNU headquarters in Tokyo. Junior Fellows are recruited through a competitive application process twice a year. Graduate students interested in the work of the United Nations — and in particular, UNU — are encouraged to apply. The primary principles of the program are focused on producing a vibrant, challenging and rewarding experience for graduate level students and young professionals.

Program objective

The purpose of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector is to:

  • Enrich interaction and dialogue between young scholars, professionals and UNU;
  • familiarize junior fellows with the activities of the Office of the Rector and the work of UNU;
  • offer opportunities for young professionals to gain comprehensive, hands-on experience in a UN agency;
  • make young professionals subject to an administrative working environment, and;
  • provide support to activities within the Office of the Rector.

Eligibilities

The qualifications necessary for each qualified applicant include but are not limited to, the following.

The applicant:

  • is currently studying or has recently completed (within two years of application) postgraduate studies (master’s or PhD), ideally in a field related to the University’s work;
  • is below 32 years of age at the time of application;
  • must not possess more than 5 years of work experience in their related field;
  • possesses a native or fluent command of written and verbal English;
  • has superb research, writing, and analytical skills;
  • can build & maintain effective working relations with people from various backgrounds;
  • demonstrates resourcefulness and innovation in problem-solving;
  • has top computer skills: sound, hands-on, knowledge of MS Office applications (familiarity with ICT tools and high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel are advantageous);
  • Displays a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and more specifically, in the work of the United Nations University.
  • Possess English language proficiency such as TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC).

Application has three stages.

Stage 1

The first stage of the application process is arranged to measure the applicant’s motivation and background and evaluate how the applicant’s qualifications meet the criteria for selection. Stage 1 requires the submission of the documents listed below.

For electronic submission, candidates should email their documents to the Office of the Rector Internship Committee via ro_internship@unu.edu  [with the subject line “Internship Application – (Applicant’s Name)”] and attachment of a copy of the completed application form, your cover letter, résumé or C.V., funding form and language certification (where applicable).

Candidates who are in Japan, may submit the hard copy of their application to the address they find on the from.

Stage 2

Applicants who are shortlisted advance to the second stage that contains a telephone or Zoom interview to further understand the applicants’ motivations.

Stage 3

In this stage, applicants shall be asked to complete an assignment similar to the work they will be doing as a fellow.
