Overview of the program

The United Nations Institute for Research and Training (UNITAR) has designed a series of training programs on multilateralism to promote the subject internationally and train those who are engaged in diplomacy.  Multilateral Diplomacy training lies at the core of UNITAR’s mission and due to the recent global context, UNITAR has specifically decided to offer this training.

The aims of these are nurturing the spirit of international cooperation and unity, building up values such as solidarity and inclusiveness in participants, and sensitizing them to the significance of combatting global challenges, such as climate change with the use of common efforts.

United Nations Immersion Programme

As part of the training activities conducted during summer 2021, UNITAR designed a combined program comprising of a four weeks e-Learning course, followed by TWO five-day field visit to Geneva, offering attendants the chance to fully immerse themselves into International Geneva Offices, and thereby acquire a direct experience of the United Nations. It includes different thematic areas:

  • peace, security, and global health
  • human rights and humanitarian affairs
  • trade and technology
  • environment and sustainable development

Program content

UNITAR will host most of the activities in the headquarters of the UN at Geneva, Switzerland. The activities will consist of topics with a balance between the following elements:

  • Expert lectures
  • Training workshops
  • Multilateral conferences
  • Private guided tours
  • Career development sessions

In addition, the Immersion Program serves to provide a summary of the UN helping participants build a robust ground knowledge of topics and themes in international affairs, provide training in major diplomatic skills and offer activities with the following UN Agencies based in Geneva:

  • United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG)
  • United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • World Trade Organization (WTO)
  • International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

Program objective

The program aims to equip participants with knowledge and skills in diplomacy, allowing them to work more effectively and efficiently in any international setting.

Premium Package

Participants also enjoy the chance to choose an Immersion Programme premium package that includes a 4-weeks preparatory e-Learning course on the UNITAR online platform, conducted in the weeks directly before the field visit and thereby preparing the stage for their time at the UN.

The course includes 4 different modules, which can be studied in a self-paced manner taking 6-8 hours of study time per week. It also includes weekly reading material, multimedia files as well as moderated discussion boards:

1st Module: The United Nations

2nd Module: Conference Diplomacy

3rd Module: Negotiation Skills

4th Module: Cross-cultural Communication

Who can participate?

  • Everyone with a deep interest in the United Nations can apply to the Immersion Programme.
  • Participants can come from the public or private sector, NGOs, think tanks, and academia. University students and participants from completely different backgrounds are equally welcome to apply.
  • To ensure the highest quality standards, the institute only accepts a maximum of 20 participants per filed visit and 30 per online training program.

Benefits

  • For premium package participants, accommodation in the city will be provided but for the basic package will not.
  • In general, participants will get the chance to gain first-hand experience and insight into the work of the United Nations while also boosting their skills on the ground in Geneva.
  • At the end of the program, UNITAR will award a certificate to participants.
