Overview of the program

The United Nations Institute for Research and Training (UNITAR) has designed a series of training programs on multilateralism to promote it internationally and train those who are engaged in international affairs.  UNITAR, due to the recent global context, has decided to offer this training.

As part of this training, UNITAR offers the second edition of its Human Rights Council Training Program online to foster participants’ understanding and skills in the areas of human rights and international affairs. This will, furthermore, empower them to assume leadership roles in their respective environments and thereby continue to promote respect for human rights in the world. This course will run in parallel to the real UN Human Rights Council Sessions in Geneva in 2021.

Program content/structure

The Human Rights Council Training Programme is a three-week course and runs on UNITAR ́s virtual learning platform. The cornerstone of the Human Rights Council Training Programme will be three e-Learning modules. Every module contains reading material, multimedia files, a discussion forum for written exchanges and a multiple-choice assessment quiz.

The course will contain the following modules:

Module 1 – The United Nations

Module 2 – Conference Diplomacy

Module 3 – Human Rights, Climate Change and the SDGs

The e-Learning modules will be complemented by a series of live components provided to participants via Zoom. These contain several 3-hour interactive e-workshops by experts such as current UN staff or retired ambassadors. The training will offer the following e-workshops:

  • Negotiation Skills
  • Leadership Skills
  • UN Resolution Writing Skills

Most importantly, in view of the training conduction simultaneously with real Human Rights Council, participants will be able to partake in its sessions in live-stream.

In short, the training comprises the following elements:

  • Real Sessions of the Human Rights Council in live-stream
  • Live-Webinars with UN human rights experts
  • Virtual Guided Tours through the UN Palace of Nations

Program objective

It aims to foster the participants’ belief in the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, especially human rights, and also help participants explore the opportunity to gain valuable insights into possible employment opportunities in the United Nations system.

  • UNITAR accepts a variety of professional backgrounds as well as different degrees of experience among its participants. Therefore, the training is open to all actors related to international affairs who have a candid passion for human rights.
  • Participants can come from public or private sector backgrounds, representatives from NGOs, think tanks, and academia. High School and University students are equally welcome to apply.
