Introduction to the course

The e-course is designed to enhance the knowledge and capacities of data producers and data users – from within and outside of Government – on issues of concern and related to official statistics, data governance, communities and partnerships, and data value chain required to ensure an effective monitoring for the SDGs.

This e-course gives a good introduction to anyone interested to learn more about the meaning and the value of official statistics and different types of data sources. Also, it is a good resource for members of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and National Statistical Systems (NSSs), particularly, newcomers and all those who want to update their knowledge of UN Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics (UN-FPOS)

Learning objectives

After the completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate official statistics from other data produced and describe UN Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and their implementation by legislative frameworks;
  • Explain different quality dimensions of official statistics from a user perspective as well as organizational set-ups and coordination within and outside of National Statistical Systems (NSS);
  • Differentiate data types and sources and apply internationally practiced models concerned in data production and statistical organization.

Course content and structure

The overall purpose of the introductory course is to increase awareness among the decision-makers about the value of official statistics by raising knowledge about the basics of official statistics, institutional setting, coordination, and communication around data ecosystems.

It comprises 3 modules:

  • Understanding UN Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics;
  • Efficacious data governance systems for monitoring SDGs;
  • Managing data-related partnerships, competencies, resources, and processes with regard to SDGs.

  • an interactive lesson,
  • a manual in a pdf format,
  • a glossary and abbreviations,
  • built-in formative assessments,
  • a concluding assessment (multiple-choice test) at the end of the Module.
