Overview of the program

The United Nations Institute for Research and Training (UNITAR) is glad to announce its Diplomacy 4.0 Training Programme in Autumn 2021. Its primary purpose is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to fight pressing issues at the intersection of diplomacy and technology. Furthermore, the course subject explores the relationship between diplomacy and areas of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, scientific advancements and other substantial issues, paving the ground for the next generation of international affairs professionals.

Program content

The program comprises two parts: a 6-week e-Learning course on the UNITAR online platform, and a 5-day field visit to Geneva, Switzerland. Both components will be implemented directly after each other consecutively.

E-Learning course

The e-learning course is a self-paced one that requires 6-8 hours of studying per week. It includes weekly reading material, multimedia files as well as discussion boards including the exchange of views with fellow participants and instructors.

  • 2: Digital and Cyber Diplomacy
  • 3: Cybersecurity
  • 4: Artificial Intelligence
  • 5: Internet Governance
  • 6: Science Diplomacy

5-Day Field Visit 

Directly after the course, participants are invited to Geneva for a head-on training program. Hosted in the historic Palais des Nations, UNITAR will offer  a unique agenda comprising the following elements:

  • Expert lectures
  • Training workshops
  • Multilateral conferences
  • Private guided tours
  • Career development sessions

In addition, through the Training Programme, participants will also be able to attend real multilateral conferences on the topic as well as to visit the following Geneva-based organizations:

  • United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG)
  • International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
  • European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN)
  • World Economic Forum (WEF)
  • World Trade Organization (WTO)

Program objective

The program aims to equip participants with knowledge and skills in diplomacy, allowing them to work more effectively and efficiently in any international environment.
