United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) encourages governmental and non-governmental organizations (UNESCO), civil society activists, and individuals active in fostering foundations for peace and tolerance to introduce candidates for the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the advancement of Tolerance and Non-violence.

This program aims to reward individuals, institutions, non-governmental organizations, and other entities who have made momentous contributions and displayed leadership in the institutionalization of tolerance and non-violence principle.

The Prize was created in 1995 on the occasion of the UN Year for Tolerance and also the 125th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. 1995 was also the year when UNESCO admitted the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance. Moreover, the ideals of UNESCO’s constitution declaring that “peace, if it is not to fail, must be based on the ethical and intellectual solidarity of mankind,” inspires the establishment of the aforementioned Prize.

Additionally, the Prize recognizes international human rights and prosperity. For this reason, it bears the name of its benevolent, Madanjeet Singh, a UNESCO’s Goodwill Ambassador, and Indian, writer, artist, and diplomat.

Each edition of the Prize is held every two years on the occasion of International Day for Tolerance (November 16th) and is marked by a ceremony presenting the winners with an amount of US$ 100, 000.
