Nominations for the UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences are now open for 2023. Awarded every year, the prize recognizes the excellent efforts of individuals or institutions through scientific research towards bettering the quality of human life.
The primary aim of the Prize is to stimulate research, boost collaboration amongst researchers and strengthen networks of centers of excellence in the life sciences towards these goals.

Why this prize?

As life sciences is of key importance to a better future, they contribute to poverty elimination, improved health, food, and water security. So, contributions in this area are crucially important.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for the prize, Individual(s) or Institutions should be confirmed by:

• Either Member Countries in counseling with their National Commissions; or
• Non-governmental organizations in official association with UNESCO active in a field related to the Prize.

*Each of the above authorities can endorse up to 5 candidates no later than the yearly announced deadline. Self-nominations will not be taken into consideration.

How to Apply?

To kick off the application, candidates must first register online following which candidates will receive a temporary password to get access to and complete an online form in English or French.

Application form consists of:

• Background Information
• Summary of the candidate’s contribution to the Prize’s objectives;
• Outline of the work/research;
• List of Publications.

All supporting documents (such as publications, photos, videos) must be submitted online through the online system.

Once the form is complete, applications may be submitted in two ways:

• Applicants invited to apply by an NGO can upload evidence of their confirmation and submit to the UNESCO Secretariat.
• Or, Applicants can submit their application to a National Commission via the online process.

The UNESCO Secretariat only receives applications that have the official endorsement. Therefore, the candidate should ensure endorsement with the relevant National Commission.

Evaluation Criteria:

The Secretariat reviews the application and sends the eligible to an international jury which will then recommend them to the Director-General for the final selection decision.
