About the award
The world academy of sciences (TWAS) offers an annual cash prize of TWAS – “Samira Omar Innovation for Sustainability Prize” for Scientists from Least Developed countries (LDCs). the prize is named after and supported by TWAS Fellow Samira Omar.
For 2021, female scientists from the least developed countries who are working in the areas relevant to sustainability can apply to this prize to win a cash prize of 4000 USD.

Those applicants who gained scientific achievements in any of the following thematic areas can win the prize:
- Green Chemistry
- Clean and renewable energy
- Sustainable agriculture and agrobiodiversity
- Plastic: degradation, pollution, and microplastics
- Water purification and sanitation
- Climate change; environmental effects, methane contribution, carbon capture
- Transportation technologies; affection for smart cities
- Waste management
- Biodiversity; the 6th mass extinction, ecosystem services, habitat recovery, and restoration
- Ecological economics and planetary health
Eligibilities
- For the 2021 Award, all members of TWAS, as well as science academies, national research councils, universities, and scientific institutions in developing and developed nations around the world, can nominate their eligible nominees.
- Nominees should have at least two years of work experience by living or working in the least developed country prior to their nomination.
- Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree.
- Applicants must be from one of the eligible LDC countries, see the list of eligible countries here.
- Self-nominations are not acceptable.

- Previous fellows of TWAS are not eligible.
- The same nominee is not eligible for nomination for more than one ‘Fellows of TWAS Awards’ in a given year.

Eligible nominators/institutions can nominate their qualifying female candidates for this award online.
Selection process
The first screening of the online application will be conducted by TWAS. The second step will be done by the jury members. Finally, Prof. Omar will choose the winner.

- PhD. degree details, including the field of study, year of award, and institutions.
- Details on any academies and societies he/she is their member.
- Brief details of any honor or distinctions received.
- List of 10 most prominent publications in an internationally acceptable format.
- Comprehensive yet short CV of the candidates.
- The nominee’s h-index in Google Scholar and its related number of citations.
