Opportunity Description

Fellowship for research and advance training in developing countries provided by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for young scientists in one of the developing countries. Moreover, the fellowship is designed for three to twelve months at a research institution other than the applicant’s home country. Additionally, the fellowship aim is to perform the research qualification of promising scientists, especially those who are starting a research career newly.

Eligibilities:

  • The fellowships are for advanced study and research. Young scientists with at least an MSc or comparable degree are eligible to apply.
  • Young scientists who are employed by a research institution in a developing nation and who are citizens of any branch of the natural sciences are eligible to apply for the fellowships.
  • No age restriction applies. However, individuals working in Least Developed Countries and young researchers just starting out in their careers are given preference.
  • Institutions affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), located in China, are unable to serve as hosts under this program. Candidates who want to do a fellowship in China must confirm that the host they have selected is a CAS institute.

Terms and Benefits:

  • Be able to perform research during the three to twelve months.
  • TWAS will pay the international low-cost traveling experience with a monthly payment of about 300 USD Dollars.
  • The host institutions are expected to provide accommodation and food and other research materials.

Required documents:

  • Copy of passport (information page)
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae no longer than five pages, including the publications.
  • Statement of support from the home institution head.
  • Two recommendation letters from senior scientists that know the applicants work very well. Please remember that the head of your home institutions cannot be your reference.
  • MSc certificate and transcript.
  • Acceptance letter from a host institute.

Important Notes:

  • It should be noted that the Fellowships are only offered for South-South trips, or for scholars visiting universities in other developing nations.
  • Please be aware that applicants are limited to one TWAS and OWSD portfolio program application per calendar year. In that year, applicants are ineligible to participate in the TWAS Visiting Professor programs at any other university. One exception: The institution’s head may still apply for another program even though they have invited an outside scholar to offer their expertise as part of the TWAS Visiting Professor programs.
