Opportunity Description

The applications for the MEXT-University of Tokyo Scholarships are open to international candidates for 2024. Applicants from countries with dipmlomatic relation with Japan or those listed by MEXT can apply to pursue their Master’s degree or PhD in Japan.

Tokyo University Scholarships are awarded in coordination with the Japanese MEXT Organization, who have the authority to finalize applicants recommended by the University for the Scholarship awarding. These scholarships are fully-funded and available to all international students.

Benefits of the MEXT-University of Tokyo Scholarships

MEXT University-Recommended Scholarships at the University of Tokyo in Japan are a Fully Funded Scholarship that covers almost all costs of the student, including the following.

Monthly Allowance:

Monthly allowance for the AY24 is under review, applicants may review the monthly amounts for AY2023 as an example:

  • 144,000 Yen/Month (for a Master’s Program student)
  • 145,000 Yen/Month (for a student of a Doctoral Program)
  • Additional monthly allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen for those students studying or undertaking research in some designated regions of the country.

Tuition Fee:

Enrollment and full tuition fees are payable by MEXT. Additionally, MEXT Scholars don’t require to pay Application Fee.

Traveling Cost:

Economy class air ticket from the international airport closest to the applicants place of residence and from Japan to applicants’ home countries.

Who is Eligible?

International candidates fulfilling the conditions given below are eligible for the MEXT-University of Tokyo Scholarships:

  • International students from any world’s nationality and from any country that has diplomatic relations with Japan or specified by MEXT.
  • Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1989.
  • Candidates must have the necessary qualifications and apply for the degree course that they studied at their previous university level or a related field.
  • Be physically and mentally healthy
  • Be able to arrive in Japan by a date specified by the University which might be within two weeks before or after the first day of the semester (October 1) of AY.
  • All applicants should enter Japan with student visa.
  • Candidates should meet one of the language requirements for English or Japanese language as follows:

English Language Requirnments:

  • Applicants should provide an English proficiency test score equivalent to B2 or above on the CEFR scale (e.g. TOEFL iBT 72 or above, IELTS 5.5 or above).
  • Alternativly, applicants can prove that they have completed their previous studies in  English that satisfies the entrance requirements for their desired program at the University of Tokyo.

Japanese Language Requirnments:

  • Applicants must have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) with a score of N2 or higher.
  • Alternativly, applicants can prove that they have completed their previous studies in  Japanese language that satisfies the entrance requirements for their desired program at the University of Tokyo.

Who is NOT Eligible?

The following applicants are not eligible for the Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship. They must decline the scholarship offer if they fall under any one of the following criteria:

  • Applicant is an active member of the military or a civilian employed by the military
  • Unable to travel to Japan within the period specified by MEXT or the University of Tokyo
  • Are former recipient of a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship
  • Those who are also applying for a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for another AY2024 program.
  • Applicants who are residing in Japan
  • Those who expects to receive a scholarship from any source other than the Japanese Government (MEXT)
  • Candidates who are going to graduate by the entrance date at the time of application, but cannot provide proof of completing a degree by the deadline.
  • Japanese national with dual nationality with another country and cannot provide proof of relinquishing Japanese nationality by the arrival day
  • First time applicants planning a long period of fieldwork or internship in a country other than Japan or a long-term leave of absence, etc.
  • Applicnats who don’t go on to regular (degree-seeking) programs
  • Those who do not plan on pursuing further academic degrees

Application Documents

Please prepare the following documents as part your application package:

  • Application Form (must be in double-sided print)
  • Field of Study and Research Plan
  • Letter of recommendation from “dean or above”
  • Passport photo taken within the last 6 months (4.5 x 3.5 cm, upper-body, full-faced, without a cap)
  • Official transcript
  • Proof of language ability (TOEFL, IELTS or JLPT score report )
  • Abstract of graduation thesis
  • Official statement of (expected) graduation
  • A copy of the student’s passport

How to Apply for MEXT-University of Tokyo Scholarships?

Application Instructions:

  1. Apply for Master’s/Doctoral program admission in Graduate School of Science at the University of Tokyo.
  2. Submit the required documents for MEXT Scholarship after completing their admission application. Please read the guides here for Special Selection for International Applicants.
  3. These documents should be in Japanese or English in A4 format using software such as MS Word and printed double-sided (duplex printing).
  4. Submitted documents will not be returnable
  5. Late submission is not acceptable
  6. Incomplete application package are not considerable
  7. In some countries, a government administrative office issues a graduation certificate or other documents. In such case, the University of Tokyo may confirm that the certificate issued contains no erroneous information.
