Opportunity Description

Overview

The applications for this fellowship by the Rothamsted Research are open now.

The Rothamsted International Fellowship intends to support the exchange of vital agricultural research skills between Rothamsted Research and scientists from Low- to Middle- income countries.

The Fellowship will support foreign scholars to work at either of Rothamsted Research’s main centers for 6-12 months on a research project they co-develop with a senior scientist at Rothamsted, who will oversee the project.

Details

Application Period: 26th June 2020 to 28th September 2020

Fellowship Duration: 6-12 Months

Funded By: Rothamsted International

Research focus area: Agriculture

Benefits

The Fellowship will provide successful candidates with:

  • Observation and training at Rothamsted Research
  • Funding for Research expenses related to their project
  • Access to world-class research equipment and scientific support
  • Funds for accommodation and sustenance
  • Funding for travel between the country of origin and the UK

Eligibility

The Candidate must fulfill the following criteria:

  • The Candidature must be of doctoral status, with a minimum of two years’ post-doctoral experience. Candidates without Higher Degrees must demonstrate equivalent research experience to be considered eligible for the program
  • Applications will be disqualified where the main intent of the visit is research leading to a higher degree for the Candidate
  • The Candidate must be a national, or be based exclusively in a low- to middle- income country. Please remember that this will be identified as the countries listed on the DAC list of ODA recipients
  • Candidates who have widespread and/or constant employment in a high-income country are ineligible for RI Fellowships
  • Candidate should return to employment in their home country to apply the experience gained through the RI Fellowship to their own country
  • Applications are submitted by the British supervisor but must bear relevance to research in the candidate’s home country. Therefore, it is critical that the candidate maintains contact with the UK supervisor and helps to co-develop the research proposal. Proposals with little contributions from the candidate, or supervisor, are unlikely to succeed
  • Along with the support of the UK supervisor, applications must also have approval from the Head of Department, where the fellows will be hosted.

Communication of application results

This is a competitive scheme and selection process, and the Panel’s decision will be communicated to the candidate and Supervisor – normally within two months of the application deadline.

How to apply?

To apply for the RI Fellowship, applicants need to consider the following steps:

STEP 1:

The candidate:

  • Holds a research idea in mind with direct relation to development issues in the Fellow’s home country.
  • Checks to see that their proposal matches the agricultural, biological, environmental, mathematical, or computational sciences, and adheres to the Rothamsted Science Strategy.
  • Must then choose a potential Supervisor at Rothamsted Research and seek their consent and idea to co-develop a fellowship proposal.

Note: Applicants may find the Supervisor, either through the previous contact with that person, recommendations through colleagues, scientific literature reviews or by selecting the related researcher from the Center’s departmental pages

STEP 2:

  • After the identification of a supervisor, and once they agree to co-develop a research project with the candidate, the Supervisor requests an application form and further instruction from Rothamsted International.

Note: Applicants cannot receive the application forms from this website, and they must be submitted by the Supervisor.

The supervisor submits the Fellowship application on the applicant’s behalf and in advance of the stated deadline.

STEP 3:

A jury of experts will review the applications.

The successful candidates and their Supervisors agree on a start date for the project.
