Introduction to program

In order to diversify its programs, the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) has designed the Rising Scholars Postdoctoral Fellows Program for which it is currently accepting applications from scholars coming from different countries. The program aims to recruit post-PhD scholars with the potential to take on a tenure-track faculty position and who will explore a professional development opportunity with the help of mentors.

Program outline

The fellowship program comprises of two components:

  • The Rising Scholars Postdoctoral Fellows Program, in general, is aimed at supporting under-represented scholars in any field; applicants in Science, Technology, Engineering and Management (STEM) fields are especially encouraged to apply.
  • The Rising Scholars Postdoctoral Fellows in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences are financed by a university-wide Race, Place, and Equity grant from the Mellon Foundation and UVA matching funds to promote research, creative practice, and teaching relating to race, justice and equity (RJE). Applicants to the Mellon-supported part should specify a home department in the Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences and they must work on RJE-related questions.

Eligibilities

  • To be eligible, applicants must hold a terminal degree (Ph.D., or, where appropriate, an MFA).
  •  Candidates who obtained (or will obtain) their terminal degree between August 24, 2019, and August 24, 2021 qualify to apply.
  • The RJE component especially looks for applicants with a pertinent academic or creative focus. Research areas or creative focus might include, but are by are not limited to, labor stratification, race and environment/health, inequity, civil rights history, race and public policy, social movements, race and literature, arts, etc.
