Program overview

National Institute of Genetics (NIG), Department of Genetics, SOKENDAI is inviting applications from international undergraduate and postgraduate students for a research internship program in Japan. Those who wish to get an internship and earn experience in genetics and other relevant fields in life sciences and undertake a research at the NIG are welcome to apply for this internship.

The program supports include two categories:

  1. Financials

NIG’s internship amount includes:

  • Costs of travel
  • Local transportation fares between the airport in Japan and NIG
  • Accommodation in the institute’s guesthouse, and
  • Travel insurance during the program. Stipend for meals (ca. 1,500JPY/day, subject to change) will also be provided.
  1. Non-financials
  • A certificate to those who have successfully completed the program.
  • Participation in various activities such as graduate program lectures, journal clubs, and seminars by distinguished researchers from inside and outside of NIG.
  • Japanese language classes are also available.

Program outline

The internship program includes training on scientific research, scientific communication, and lab visits to converse with individual principal investigators. At the conclusion of the program, interns will deliver a presentation on their experience at the “NIGINTERN Reports Symposium”.

Interns’ responsibilities

  • Work on the days and times agreed with the supervisor.
  • Adhere to the regulations of NIG.
  • Keep confidentiality of unpublished information at NIG.
  • Complete assignments, tasks, and projects related to the internship experience.

To receive financial benefits, interns should:

  • Participate in the project fully on a full-time basis
  • Commit to efforts at the host institute
  • Give the presentation and submit an essay and questionnaire at the end of the term


Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the program.

  • Must be interested in life sciences and be in the pre-final-year while applying, meaning that:
  • be in the 3rd year of a 4-year bachelor program,
  • in the 2nd year of a 3-year bachelor program,
  • the 4th year of a 5-year program,
  • in the 1st year of a 2-year master program, or
  • the 5th year of a 6-year program.
  • Applicants from all nationalities can apply.
  • Students who demonstrate an interest in enrolling in the institute’s Ph.D. program at NIG are encouraged to apply.

* Because of an extremely competitive selection process, applications from non-pre-final students and pre-final students of a doctoral course are not eligible.

  • Applicants should first prepare their initial information.
  • Complete registration in the system after which they will receive an email.
  • They need to enter the name and email addresses of two references in the initial registration.
  • Recommenders will have to submit their letters on your behalf in the system.
  • Finally, you can log into the application system using that information and complete it.

  • CV in English describing applicants’ record from high school onward
  • Academic transcript in English
  • Two recommendation letters
