Opportunity Description

The International Centre for Theoretical Physics offers a postgraduate diploma program for applicants from developing countries to prepares them for Ph.D. studies. This short term program contains advanced scientific research in developing countries with expert instructors in Italy. After completion applicants are expected to work on a dissertation to be submitted and defended. Applicants who studied physics, mathematics, or any relevant areas and wished to be qualified in their fields or want to start their Ph.D., are highly encouraged to apply for this fully-funded program. Nationals of Afghanistan as one of the developing countries and members of UNESCO are also eligible for this postgraduate diploma program. Moreover, after completing thIs course, applicants will be able to start their Ph.D. degree in different prestigious university in the USA or UK, or return to their home country or can continue their collaboration with ICTP.

Note: qualified applicants who meet the requirements can participate to course with their expenses. They need to provide their financial resources of bank account statement, or any funds resource.

  • The applicant’s age must be over 28 years.
  • Applicants must be nationals of UN, UNESCO or IAEA member.
  • Applicants must hold an MSc degree or good BSc in physics, mathematics or any relevant fields.
  • Applicants must have an excellent academic record.
  • Must have excellent English language proficiency.
  • Applicants must have knowledge of the following areas:
    • Physics matter: solid-state physics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, classical mechanics, electrodynamics, mathematical physics.
    • High energy, Cosmology, and Astroparticle physics: classical mechanics, electrodynamics, particular theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics.
    • Earth system physics: a theoretical background in physics, mathematics, or engineering; mathematical methods applied in geophysics and geosciences.
    • Mathematics: basic abstract algebra; elements of real and complex analysis; topology.
    • Quantitative life sciences: classical mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, mathematical methods for physics, necessary programming skills.

  • Any documents that show the applicant’s ability to continue the advanced-level course study and write scientific literature in English.
  • Two recommendation letters from senior scientists that know you very well and your work.
