Overview

1000 girls, 1000 futures is a pioneering initiative developed by the New York Academy of Sciences to engage young women and girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and help them enhance their careers in these fields by receiving mentorship and building 21-century skills. The application for the 2021/22 round of the program is now open for both students and mentors.

How does it work?

The initiative enables young women to learn autonomously and work collaboratively on Launchpad _ the academy’s unique online learning platform_ where they can work on projects in a self-paced manner and use their skills to work with other team members with the guidance of mentors throughout the program.

Who can apply?

  • Anyone who is 13-17 years old can apply from all corners of the world.
  • Applicants should be either high school students or pursuing an equivalent qualification and have an interest in the STEM Field.

Other requirements

  • Language: all program content and communication will be in English, so applicants should have a strong proficiency in English which will be tested during the application process.
  • Time commitment: students will work on their projects at their own pace and need to set their schedules according to their mentors.
  • Cost: it is totally free to participate.

Qualifications for mentors 

To be eligible as mentors for 1000 Girls 1000 Futures, applicants must:

  • Self-identify as women who are either doing a Ph.D. in a STEM-related field OR presently working in a STEM-relevant area.
  • Be able to access at least one communication medium with internet capabilities
  • Have the ability to communicate clearly in English both in speaking and writing
  • Able to allocate  3-5 hours to the program training and participation in the program monthly from September to June
  • Passionate about bringing together and inspiring the next generation of young women worldwide
