The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office in Bangkok is inviting applications for an Individual Specialist to develop a range of communication materials to raise UNESCO’s visibility in the Asia-Pacific region.

Background

The Public Information and Outreach (PIO) Unit helps shape UNESCO Bangkok’s public image and enhance the organization’s public image in the Asia-Pacific region using media and communications outreach, publications, the office website, and social media channels.

Assignment

The incumbent shall devise communication materials to enhance UNESCO’s visibility in the Asia-Pacific region. H/she will do the job within the framework of the project, under the overall guidance of the Director of UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau for Education and the direct observation of the Chair of the Executive Office and the PIO Team Leader.

Responsibilities of the specialist

The Individual Specialist will specifically undertake the following tasks:

  • Offering support for media and communication, following content partnerships with media, as well as receiving press inquiries and facilitating interviews follow-up with colleagues in both the Bangkok office, field offices, and UNESCO headquarters;
  • Supporting UNESCO’s work for UN Communications and Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) group meetings, seeking and establishing links and interactions in line with the One UN framework;
  • Writing and editing public information materials such as press releases, media advisories, feature articles, op-eds, etc. for Asia‐Pacific media (both classic and new media) in a journalistic way and in coordination with program staff;
  • Acting as a media relations specialist for UNESCO at eminent national conferences and special events, communicating with partner agencies as necessary in communications outreach;
  • Giving inputs into and contributing to the creation and implementation of the office-wide new public information and outreach strategy also helping guide the development of centralized outreach products (videos and infographics relating to office-wide activities, etc,);
  • Working together with Social Media Associate to ensure maximum use of channels to promote communication objectives;
  • Working with unit chiefs and the Director’s office for preparing, editing and finalizing Director’s remarks for high-level events;
  • Supervising media coverage and reporting regularly on resulting UNESCO’s visibility; propose strategies to gain better visibility and impact; and
  • Carry out additional duties as and when assigned by the PIO team leader or by the Director of UNESCO Bangkok.

Required qualifications for the job:

  • Advanced university degree (master’s or corresponding) in communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • At least five years’ experience in communications, public relations, journalism or a related discipline.
  • Outstanding English writing and communication skills (verbal and non-verbal), especially interviewing and writing for mainstream media.
  • Experience in the development and execution of successful communications strategies/campaigns.
  • Working experience within the UN system/familiarity with UNESCO’s mandate/relationship with the Member States and stakeholders as well as the UN approach to communications.
  • Familiarity and proven contacts with Asia-Pacific media outlets.
