About the award

Nominations are now open for the 2022 edition of the Martin Ennals Award (MEA) that recognizes human rights defenders and organizations who have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to defending human rights in the face of obstacles and risks involved, and who need protection in continuing their work. This 2022 Award of Martin Ennals Foundation will go to a human rights defender who is working at the intersection of human rights and digital connectivity because of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on digitalization of connectivity while keeping the human rights of those with less access to this new shift in relationships.

Eligibilities

In addition to an exceptional commitment to defending and protecting human rights, the following criteria must be met by the nominees/candidates.

Candidates must:

  • Be currently active in promoting and protecting human rights. The Award does not consider defenders posthumously.
  • Should not use or advocate violence.
  • Not self-nominations for the award.
  • Not be those who are no longer need protection (e.g. because they are now in a safe environment).

Nominees and nominators have to read the award ethical guidelines beforehand.

How to nominate for the award?

Nominators have to nominate a human rights defender by filling the nomination form online. The form may be filled in English, Spanish, Arabic or French.
