About the prize

Nominations for the 2021 John Maddox Prize are now open. The prize honors the work of courageous researchers and individuals who strive to promote sound science and evidence in relation to public interests which otherwise face difficulty or hostility in doing so. It also advocates for the value of an open and welcoming environment for communities to discuss scientific issues and evidence. Therefore, if you find yourself working on issues relevant to the prize, go for it.

Awarding organization: Sense about Science “A Charity” and the scientific journal “Nature”

Number of winners: 1-2 per year

Awarding ceremony: November 2021 in London

Prize value

• The organizers award £3000 in a year to one or two outstanding nominees who have stood up for sound science in public.
• In addition, the jury, will, at its discretion, reward an additional prize to an early-stage researcher whose work related to the theme of the prize.

Eligibilities

• The John Maddox Prize is a global prize any anyone from any country and any discipline/background can be nominated for it.
• Anyone, including those praised or previous year’s nominees and people who have published with or worked with partnering organizations as contributors, advisers or in other collaborations are eligible to be nominated.
• Staff, directors, and trustees of partnering organizations, previous winners, current members of the jury panel, their direct relatives are not eligible.
• The nominator should be someone who has enough knowledge of the nominee’s work but self-nominations may be acceptable in exceptional cases.

Selection

A judging panel will assess the nominations and select the successful nominees.

Evaluation criteria

Nominations may demonstrate wide-ranging circumstances confronted by researchers all across the globe that the judges will consider them.

Specifically, the judges will also take into account:

• The importance of an individual’s effort to promote the discussion of sound science in the public area.
• The essence of the challenge(s) encountered by the individual, whether they persisted and whether those challenges were beyond the realm of their position.
• How well the nominees placed the evidence in the broader debate and engaged others.
