Fellowship overview
The IWMF Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists (FWJ), the first of its kind, supports journalists and journalism projects such as professional development, investigative reporting, and media development efforts headed by women and non-binary individuals. Since its start in 2015, FWJ has funded over 330 journalists from 47 countries, $4 million contribution from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.
Promoting the work and roles of women and non-binary journalists worldwide is crucial for increasing transparency and diversity in the news industry.
The FWJ accepts applications on a rolling basis and is available to journalists of all nationalities.

Fund:
Each year, about $230,000 will be paid out. Grant amounts will vary depending on the request and whether a thorough budget is included.
The Fund was established to assist female journalists by providing grantees with assistance in the following areas:
- Help illuminate under-reported but essential global topics
- Take on large-scale projects that challenge standard media narratives.
- Develop field-specific expertise and advance your career
- Take advantage of training and leadership possibilities.
- Launch entrepreneurial news initiatives or learn how to do so.
Budget:
If you are a freelance journalist, the budget should include all your hard reporting expenditures, such as travel, housing, and photography, and a personal allowance.
The following is a partial list of items that can be in your budget:
- Stipend for freelance reporter
- Lodging
- Transportation
- Meals
- Interpreters and translators
- Photography
- Local producers
- Fees for public document requests
- Video/audio editing
- Transcription
- Bank transfer fees
- Travel Insurance
- PPE (e.g., masks, gloves)
- Licensing fees
- COVID-19 tests
IWMF can’t cover the following expense:
- For undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking programs, the cost of tuition or living expenses
- Opportunities for professional growth unrelated to journalism
- Purchase or renting of equipment (e.g., computers, cameras, microphones, hard drives, software)
- Amounts paid to sources
- Items marked as “Miscellaneous” or “Emergency”.
- General costs of operations for organizations
Eligibility Criteria:
- Women and non-binary journalists of any nationality are eligible to apply for grants from the Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists.
- The applicant must work primarily in journalism.
- Candidates must have at least one year of experience in professional journalism and a history of publication in non-student publications.
- They accept applications from teams of journalists. However, the team must include at least 50% women, and the application must be directed and completed by a woman or non-binary journalist.
- Due to staff capacity, applications can only be submitted in English (preferred) or Spanish; however, reporting can be published in any language.
