Opportunity Description

Sponsored by the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), the Fellowship program is intended for applicants who are young investigators to undertake multidisciplinary and clinical laboratory research/training in Europe. This joint fellowship program established by ISID/ESCMID in 2010 is aimed at fostering international, joint cooperation and the exchange of scientific knowledge and practice. Applicants from outside Europe, wishing to go to Europe for a fellowship period to study or research are welcome to apply.

Proposals that boost the transfer of technologies to geographical areas in particular need of them are preferred by the institution. The institution’s motto is “Manage Infections & Promote Science!”

In the formative phases of their careers, successful recipients are provided with the opportunity to enrich their research experience; learn from qualified infectious disease experts; and return home with expertise and processes that will help them enhance clinical practice in regions particularly in need of knowledge and science for infectious diseases.

ISID and ESCMID also encourage grants awardees to present their results at scientific meetings and to submit them to be published in peer-reviewed & reputed journals including, but not limited to, the International Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Eligibility criteria

ISID/ESCMID fellowships accept applications from:

  • Nationals of low and low to middle income countries, as classified by the World Bank, from outside of Europe;
  • Applicants under 40 years of age;
  • Those who use the opportunity to work or study outside of their home country to pursue ISID-inspired goals; and
  • Applicants must make their own networks and arrangements for the duration of fellowship.

  • A Five-page research plan including background, methodologies, limitations and references
  • Applicant’s curriculum vitae
  • Letter of reference from the applicant’s institution
  • Letter of invitation from the host institution
  • Curriculum vitae of applicant’s host/mentor from host institution
  • Budget details

You will be required to submit a brief written report on the outcomes of any research/study upon completion of the program.

Selection Process

Submitted proposals will be judged by members of ISID’s Research Committee and grants will be given to successful applicants in collaboration with ISID and ESCMID’s research program directors.
