Opportunity Description

International Youth Climate Delegate Program (International YCDP) registration is now open to international applicants. International YCDP will embed 100 youth participants within the global climate policy negotiation process. The program is prioritizing delegates from countries, including LDCs (Least Developed Countries), SIDS (Small Island Developing States), Indigenous Peoples, and other minority groups worldwide.

Shamma Al Mazrui, the Youth Climate Champion, in collaboration with Youth Non-Governmental Organisation (YOUNGO), the official Civil Society Constituencies of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), will supervise this program. International YCDP’s specific objectives include the following:

  • Ensure youth proposals and views are integrated into global climate policymaking and dialogues.
  • Skills and capacity building, improving knowledge, and making networks for youth to engage in climate processes, particularly in the impacted countries.
  • Provide a model for the Conference of Parties (COP) process on youth inclusion.

Benefits of the International Youth Climate Delegate Program

By participating in International YCDP, delegates will have the following opportunities:

  • Opportunity to follow the UNFCCC negotiation processes during the year, gathering shared goals and inputs from youth in their country or community.
  • Access capacity-building opportunities to learn about climate diplomacy, negotiations, etcetera.
  • Gain a broader understanding of climate action activities and the COP process.
  • Take part in the 18th Conference of Youth in the UAE and relevant local or regional youth events.
  • Participate in COP28 in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December 2023.
  • Additionally, some delegates can participate in other critical climate change summits. These summits include the Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB58) at UNFCCC headquarters in Bonn, Germany, in June 2023, the Pre-COP in October 2023, and the UN Regional Climate Weeks.

Who Can Apply?

The following groups of people can participate in International Youth Climate Delegate Program:

  • Ages limitation is between 18 to 35 by the end of the year.
  • Youth from everywhere, with solid priority to residents of SIDS, LDCS, and indigenous communities, can apply for this opportunity.
  • Be committed and experienced in climate and sustainability fields.
  • Applicants should have a minimum of two years of experience or education in climate, energy, education, humanitarian relief, infrastructure, urban development, food and water systems, health, finance, gender equality, biodiversity and nature conservation, peace and security, transport, industry, and community engagement, are most welcome.
  • Priority goes to candidates experienced in climate policy engagement and committed to building a clear advocacy plan for COP28.
  • Ideally, candidates must be independent of their government COP delegations.
  • Participants must not be a member of YOUNGO to apply.
  • Have a working knowledge of the English language.
