Scholarship overview

There are scholarships for international Chinese language teachers who teach Chinese to speakers of other languages at East China Normal University (ECNU). The scholarship is open to international applicants and is aimed at promoting knowledge of the Chinese language at the international level. Furthermore, the aim of these scholarships are to strengthen mutual collaboration and exchange between Chinese language teachers and learners in the context of language learning.

Eligibilities

Who can apply?

• Non-Chinese citizens
• Be of sound physical and mental health high-performing both academically and behaviorally
• Motivated to pursue future careers in the teaching or international promotion of the Chinese language.
• Be at the ages of 16-35 prior to program start. Those currently working as Chinese language teachers should not be older than 45 years.

Category of enrollment

Candidates can apply for these scholarships in the two following categories:

1. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

Commencing date: September 2021

Duration: A maximum of 11 months

• International students currently studying in China are ineligible.

Language requirements

1. TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature: At least 180 in HSK test (Level 4) and 60 in HSKK test (intermediate level).
2. Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy: A minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 5) and 60 in HSKK test (intermediate level).

2. Scholarship for One-Semester Study

Commencement dates: either in September 2021 or March 2022

Duration: Maximum 5 months.

• Applicants withholding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible.

Language requirement 

1. TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature: a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 4), while HSKK test score required.
2. Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy: a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 5) and 60 in HSKK test (intermediate level) in Chinese language proficiency.

The host institution will notify the applicants of the result via email or phone.

The application is online. To apply, please log into the Confucius Institute Scholarships website to register, complete the Application Form online, and upload the scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.

Recommending institutions

As part of your application, you also need to contact recommending institutions that will write recommendation letters for you which are:

1. Confucius Institutes and Confucius classrooms
2. Testing centers for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) which have the right to recommend Confucius Institute Scholarship candidates.

3. Oversea organizers of the Chinese Bridge Competition: education and cultural offices (groups) of China’s foreign embassies (consulates), Confucius Institute, and relevant educational institutions.

Required documents

The applicants should provide the following documents truly, properly and completely. All of the documents should be original and with a duplicate copy.

1) Application Form for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

2) Copy of passport information page

3) Highest diploma and transcripts (original or notarized photocopy): Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must have notarized translations in Chinese or English.

4) A study or research plan. All applicants need to submit a study or research plan. It must be in Chinese or in English within 800 words at least.

5) Recommendation letters from recommending Institution

6) Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form- filled out comprehensively (The original copy should be kept by the applicant.)

7) HSK & HSKK (the Chinese Proficiency Test) Certificate (Valid for 2 years）.

8) Non-criminal Certificate (notarized photocopy in English or Chinese)

9) Applicants below the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of permission signed by their legal custodians or a foreign or Chinese citizen in China.
