Opportunity Description

The International Mathematical Union (IMU) accepts applications for the IMU Abel Visiting Scholars Program from professional mathematicians based in developing countries to visit an international research collaborator for a period of one month.

The program is intended for post-doctoral early-stage mathematicians who wish to enrich their professional careers. Moreover, it aims to offer the opportunity for a ‘research sabbatical,’ a necessary complement to teaching and other academic duties for mathematicians eager to also sustain a viable research program.

Application Deadlines

  • For visits between January 1 and April 30, 2024: August 31, 2023
  • For visits between May 1 and August 31, 2024: December 31, 2023

Note: please send your application one week before the deadline.

Note: if the visit lasts beyond one month, the candidate should provide an indication of financial support from the host institution to cover the living costs beyond the first month.

Benefits of the IMU Abel Visiting Scholars Program

The grant only covers a one-month visit providing up to 4,400 EUR ($5,000).

Criteria for IMU Abel Visiting Scholars Program

Applicants must mee the following requirnments to apply for the IMU Abel Visiting Scholars Program:

  1. Hold a PhD in Mathematics at the time of application,
  2. Be based in a developing country at the time of application
  3. Hold a position in a university/ research institution
  4. Be in the early stages of their professional careers.

 More precisely, the applicants should:

  • not yet enjoy full professorial rank but have a working contract in a university/ college
  • not be above 35 years of age on the day of the deadline.
  • Applications from women mathematicians are highly encouraged.

Selection criteria

The selection hinges on the quality of the project and the benefit/added value for the home institution/country.

Documents Required

Please prepare and submit the following application documents:

  1. The completed Online Application Form
  2. A CV of applicant and host, including a list of recent publications (max. 3 pages each)
  3. A research plan for the visit
  4. An official invitation from the institution of the international research partner
  5. One letter of recommendation from the international collaborator or a statement from the host approving the research plan.
  6. A copy of the PhD certificate
  7. A statement about the present employment status/ position in the home institution signed and stamped by your employer. (Use this template)
  8. A budget valuation/plan. (Tentative Budget Form)
  9. A picture of the candidate for the website (upload separately to the Online Application Form)
  10. In the case of a longer-than-month research stay, candidates must provide documentation of matching funding from the host institution to cover living expenses.
