Opportunity Description

The Hodder Fellowship applications are now open to extraordinary artists and writers to pursue autonomous projects at Princeton University throughout the academic year. Potential Hodder Fellows are composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, authors, translators, or other types of artists or humanists with “far more than ordinary intellectual and literary skills” and are chosen “for promise rather than performance.” Given the caliber of the candidate pool, most successful Fellows have written the first book or have similar accomplishments in their respective fields; the Hodder is intended to offer Fellows the “studious leisure” to do important new work.

Benefits of the Hodder Fellowship

Following are the benefits of the Hodder Fellowship:

  • $90,000 for an academic year of ten months appointment as a Visiting Fellow. Please note that the Hodder Fellowship does not cover formal teaching and the program does not fund work leading to an advanced degree. 
  • Fellows will receive an additional fund of $5,000 for research expenses.
  • Fellows will have access to shared spaces on campus for throughout their fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • The Hodder Fellowship will be given to extraordinary writers and non-literary artists who seek to undertake independent projects at Princeton University throughout the academic year.
  • Potential Hodder Fellows are composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, authors, translators, or other types of artists or humanists with “far more than ordinary intellectual and literary skills” and are chosen “for promise rather than performance.”
  • No advanced degrees are necessary.
  • Non-U.S. nationals are encouraged to apply.
  • There is no upper age limit for applying.
  • This fellowship cannot be used to support work toward an MFA, Ph.D., or another advanced degree.
  • For the course of the fellowship, Hodder Fellows may not have parallel teaching appointments at other institutions.
  • Given the caliber of the applicant pool, the majority of successful Fellows have written their first book or had similar accomplishments in their respective professions. The Hodder is intended to give Fellows a year of “studious leisure” to pursue substantial new work.

Application Requirements

Applicants should submit the following application documents:

  • Personal information
  • CV/Resume
  • Project Proposal (max. 500 words) explaining your project proposal in the “Cover Letter” box of the online application.
  • Work Samples (i.e., writing samples, images of your work, video links to performances, etc.).
  • Work samples must be accompanied by a 150-word explanation of how they relate to your proposal.
    • Writing for Fun: The length of prose samples is limited to 3000 words. Submit up to 20 pages of poetry if you are a poet.
    • Visual Arts: 20 still photographs or 10 still images and 5 minutes of video. A video can represent a single piece or clips from multiple works. Submit works in PDF format with a link to a suitable online video format. If necessary, provide access passwords.
    • Dance:1 to 3 links to entire pieces with cue points for dance. The links can be rehearsals, research, or performances, but they must be constant. Send no trailers, photos, or promotional materials.
    • Theater: a 10- to 15-page written sample; 20 to 30 design renderings or pictures; or a video or audio reel with cue points. We encourage links to reputable websites or web archives.
    • Music: Include 1-2 musical compositions and/or links to 10-minute-long performances on platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, Flicker, etc.

Note: Limits of proposal size is 500 words, statement 150 words, and sample sizes are strict.
