Harvard University Center for the Environment (HUCE) is accpeting applications for 2024 Harvard Environmental Fellows Program. This fellowship program’s primary aim is to enable recent doctorate recipients to use and expand Harvard’s extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems.

The Environmental fellows work for two years with Harvard faculty members in any school or department to create new knowledge while also strengthening connections across the University’s academic disciplines.

Anyone with a PhD or other terminal degree conferred between May 2020 and August 2024 is eligible for the Environmental Fellows Program. For the 2024 cohort, HUCE anticipates awarding roughly six scholarships.

Eligibilities for the Harvard Environmental Fellows Program

For the 2024 cohort, HUCE anticipates awarding roughly six scholarships. All candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Anyone with a PhD or other terminal degree conferred between May 2020 and August 2024 is eligible for the Environmental Fellows Program.
  • Candidates must have a doctorate or equivalent in any field and may submit research projects in any discipline. Applicants who do not have a PhD may apply if they have studied in subjects where a PhD is not the standard terminal degree.
  • All successful candidates will be able to demonstrate academic research experience.
  • Candidates with terminal degrees from Harvard, and postdoctoral fellows currently working at Harvard, are eligible for the fellowship if their research and host arrangements take them in new directions that are significantly different from their PhD research and forge new connections within the University.
  • Each candidate must have a commitment from one or more Harvard faculty members to act as a mentor and to provide office or lab space for the duration of the two-year fellowship.
  • Faculty members who host fellows in 2023 are not eligible to host further fellows in 2024. Michael Brenner, Peter Huybers, Henry Lee, Robert Stavins, Tiya Miles, Dan Schrag, Missy Holbrook, and Ben Taylor are among those involved.
  • Candidates may have graduated from any university in the world. Foreign nationals are eligible for fellowships, however Harvard normally demands English competence.
  • Successful candidates must be willing to work at Harvard for the whole two-year period of the fellowship. This fellowship requires Cambridge area residency, and any fieldwork trips must be organized during the summer or January recess.

Finding a Host

  • Candidates should start looking for and connecting with a Harvard faculty member as soon as possible to host their study. The host will act as the fellow’s mentor and offer office space and fundamental administrative assistance. The faculty member is committing significantly by agreeing to be a host.
  • Successful applicants will receive the host’s enthusiastic recommendation. Each applicant’s host is required to provide the selection committee with a letter of support (no more than 2 pages) outlining their level of dedication to the candidate and the research. A lot of prospective students approach Harvard faculty members. To choose one or two candidates to suggest to the selection committee, some faculty members carry out their own selection process.
  • Many, but by no means all, possible hosts for applicants who are unfamiliar with Harvard faculty members are mentioned on HUCE’s website pages, which are categorized both by academic fields and subjects. For additional information about publications and interests, visit the individual websites of the faculty members.
  • Regardless of past background in environmental research or HUCE, every academic member from any discipline has the ability to act as a host. Faculty hosting fellows in 2023 are not eligible to host more fellows in 2024. This includes Richard Lazarus, Michael Brenner, Peter Huybers, Henry Lee, Robert Stavins, Tiya Miles, Dan Schrag, Missy Holbrook, and Ben Taylor.
