Overview of the competition

The Global Development Network (GDN) has designed the Global Development Awards Competition 2022. With the sponsoring of Policy and Human Resources Development Fund (PHRD) trust fund administered by the World Bank and the and support of the Japanese Ministry of Finance, the prizes are awarded to the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that submit innovative proposals in response to the themes identified for the competition.

[The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (MIDP) category]

The MIDP is also a competitive grant program that supports non-profit Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in low or lower-middle-income countries to design and implement groundbreaking research projects aimed at addressing development-related problems of people living in the target countries.

Benefits:

Grants totaling $125,000 will be awarded to the three winning projects. The grants will be given to organizations whose initiatives bestow innovative solutions on pressing development issues and show the most promise for:

  • Directly addressing the needs of the most underserved, vulnerable, and underprivileged groups in order to improve their lives and achieve quick results for improved livelihood;
  • Expanding the project in order to support initiatives that produce long-term solutions.

Grants:

  • A grant of US$ 50,000 will be given to each of the two first-place winners under each theme. The first-place winner is also eligible to compete for an additional grant of up to US$ 200,000 through the Japan Social Development Fund in order to test their creative work on a larger scale.
  • A grant of $20,000 will be given to the second-place winner.
  • Additionally, awardees will work closely with a Technical Advisor for the duration of the grant’s implementation.

Prior to their presentations at the conference, finalists in both categories receive training in communicating research and development. They are anticipated to be present for the actual event.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Open for applications on projects that are currently in the implementation stage from non-profit NGOs and Civil Society Organizations (COs) from the list above.
  • To qualify, a project’s implementation must have begun on or before June 1, 2021.
  • Additionally, in accordance with the national legal system (for example, in India, the NGO/SO must comply with FCRA), NGOs/SOs applying for the MIDP category must be qualified to receive funds from abroad.
  • Winners from previous years may reapply, but they must update their applications to reflect any changes to their projects.
  • The MIDP is not open to previous winners.
  • There can be only one proposal per applicant.
  • GDN strongly urges female researchers to participate and submit applications.

Guidelines for the use of the Application Submission Portal

Further points to considered:

  • An organization can apply only once regardless of the theme.
  • All applications must include CVs of the project team members.
  • Proposals and all other submission documents must be submitted only in English.
  • Applicants must read the guidelines and terms and conditions of the award and agree with them before submitting an application.

Selection procedure

A multi-stage review process will be conducted to choose the winners after the closing of the submission stage.

Important deadlines 

  • Deadline for submissions: 14 November 2022
  • Announcement of Eligibility screening results: 21 November 2022
  • Announcement of Desk review results (1st shortlisted applications): 15 December 2022
  • Announcement of Business review results (2nd shortlisted applications): 30 December 2022
  • Site visits to 2nd shortlisted applications: 2 January until 27 January 2023
  • Announcement of finalists: 17 February 2023
  • Announcement of winners: March/April 2023

The Communications Training and the actual event where the finalists present their concepts to the jury are expected to take place in March or April. In late 2022, the date will be made public.
