Overview of scholarship

Applications are now open for the 2020-21 Girl Up Scholarship Fund. Girl Up offers this scholarship fund to honor a young leader’s unshakable commitment to making a change in the world and making it a better place for every girl, everywhere. In its first round of the scholarship fund, it supports 20 Girl Up members as they continue their higher education in their respective institutions. Benefits

In the current year, the Girl Up will award 87,000$, in scholarships, to alleviate financially poor girls’ economic burden while supporting them to pursue higher education and advocate for gender equality.

Of the total scholarship value, 2500$ will go to at least 35 eligible girls each.  The fund will be directly paid to the recipients’ higher education institutions where they are studying covering their tuition fees.

Who can apply for this scholarship fund?

  • The scholarship fund is open to young girls and women of all nationalities around the world.

To be eligible to receive the scholarship an applicant should be:

  • A Girl Up member (event attendee, Club member, program beneficiary, etc.)
  • Already enrolled in a 2-year, 4-year, or technical college by time of selection (final year high/secondary school students can also apply!)

Pursuing higher education in specific field categories as follows: 

  • Storytelling – pursuing storytelling/communications, art fields, and/or relevant field;
  • Sports – studying athletics, sports-related field and/or plans to use sports as a platform for change
  • STEM – pursuing science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or relevant field
  • In no family relationship with a UN Foundation employee or have no other conflict-of-interest with the UN Foundation

Evaluation criteria

The selection process is competitive and will include a fair evaluation based on the following criteria: 

  • A firm commitment to gender equality
  • Leadership capacity
  • Community work and school activities
  • Educational and career goals and challenges
  • Previous academic performance (e.g. GPA)
  • Applicant’s background (e.g. financial barrier, first-gen, DACA, disabilities, etc.)
  • Letter of recommendation

4 Essays 

Essay 1

  • In 500 or lower, describe the community in which you were brought up, how it influenced you, your upbringing, values, experience, and educational dreams. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome?

Essay 2

  • In 250 words or less, explain how this scholarship will help you achieve your personal, professional or career-related goals. How can you improve gender equality through the scholarship categories?

Essay 3

  • In 250 words or less, say how have you advocated for gender equality in your community? In what manners have you shown your leadership strength by the activities relating to the fields?

Essay 4

  • Storytelling Applicants: In 500 words or less, provide an example of how you’re involved in storytelling (journalism, news broadcasting, poetry, etc.)? in what way have you used storytelling to effect a change in your community? How have your storytelling experiences helped you thrive as a leader?
  • Sports Applicants: In 500 words or less, give an instance of how you’re involved in sports (athlete, attendee, fan, etc.)? How have you used sports as a ground to bring a change in your community? How have sports developed you as a leader?
  • STEM Applicants: In 500 words or less, give an example of how you’re involved in STEM (area of study, club, work, etc.)? How have you treated STEM as a platform to make a change in your community? How has it developed you as a leader?
  • A video essay answering prompts in any of the fields you choose (see the link below for details).
  • One recommendation letter from an instructor, mentor, coach etc.
  • Photo
  • The biographical and demographical information
  • List of extra-curricular activities, if any.
