Competition Overview

COMSTECH, the Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) together with the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum (ICYF), is calling for submissions for the 2020 COMSTECH-ICYF Essay Competition on Artificial Intelligence. The competition aims to promote the understanding of AI as a leading technology of modern time and its momentum in various areas of economy and society. So, if you have a creative thought about the application of AI, it is for you to participate.

Benefits/prizes

The competition awards two categories of prizes:

  • Three suitable prizes for three first-grade winners.
  • And, the ten best essays would be featured in an ICYF-COMSTECH publication arranged specifically for this purpose.

 Competition Rules and procedures:

  1. Essay Competition is open to participants from OIC countries.
  2. The competition consists of two categories for students and young professionals:
    1. Undergraduate students (18 to 25 years);
    2. Advanced students and Professionals (25 to 35 years)
  3. Undergraduates are those students currently enrolled in an Undergraduate (BS) program in a higher education institution or those having completed their BS but not yet enrolled in an MS or Ph.D. program.
  4. Conversely, advanced students and professionals are those who are either enrolled in a Graduate Program (MS, Ph.D.) in AI or employed in the field of AI.
  5. The essay applicants submit should be between 1300 words and 1600 words (Font size 12).
  6. Each applicant may only submit one essay.
  7. You must submit your essays electronically in any of the 3 official OIC languages viz. Arabic, English, or French.
  8. The essays may not have been previously published either electronically or in print form.

Outline/Structure of the Essay

The submitted essay should include the following indicators:

  • Introduction and Background of Selected Topic (up to 250 words)
  • Current State of Technology (up to 300 words)
  • Proposed Idea and its Novelty (up to 550 words)
  • Implementation of Idea (up to 300 words) (stakeholders, target audience, etc.)
  • Expected Impact on Society (up to 200 words)

  • AI in Health/Education

Medical imaging and diagnostics, Telehealth, Drug Creation, Therapeutics, Medical Treatment, Rehabilitation, Health Monitoring, e-learning, Learning Management, Personalized learning experience, Evaluations, and assessments.

  • AI for Technology Frontiers

ICT, Robotics, Mining, Smart Cities, IoT, Business, Marketing, Media, Chat-bots, Manufacturing, Customer Services, e-commerce, etc.

  • AI in E-Governance

Finance, Security, Justice, Crime-fighting, and prevention, Public policy, Informed decision making, Emergency response, Defense and National Security, Immigration, etc.

  • Ethical & Regulatory Issues in Applications of AI

Data privacy, digital crime fighting, AI – human co-existence, Robot rights, Biases in data, Liabilities for autonomous systems, AI weaponization, etc.

  • AI for Social Development

Equality and Inclusion, Hunger management, Economic empowerment, Gender equality, Environment, Infrastructure planning, and development, etc.

Evaluation process

An international Jury of 4 persons will assess the qualifying essays. The essays will be checked for plagiarism using standard software, and those with a high similarity index with published materials do not qualify. Besides, the panel will assess the essays for novelty and practicality of the ideas proposed next to the clarity of expression and language.

Judging Criteria

An international jury will evaluate the submissions following the main evaluation criteria below:

  • Structure and organization of Essay
  • The technical depth of the chosen topic
  • The novelty of the proposed idea
  • Application potential of the proposed theme

Firstly, all applicants have to submit a succinct introductory Write-up (summary) for initial scrutiny (150 to 300 words).
