Opportunity Description

The Open Society Foundation offers Civil Society Scholar Awards to help university faculty and doctoral students undertake academic projects. The project should enrich socially engaged research and critical scholarship in the country or region.

Award: maximum $15000

Application period: March 1- July 22, 2020

Program eligible date:  March 1, -December 31, 2021

Who can apply?

  • The applicants should have a nationality of one of the following countries:
    • Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burundi, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Georgia, Haiti, Kosovo, Laos, Libya, North Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Myanmar/Burma, Nepal, Palestine, Rwanda, Serbia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.
  • Doctoral students who are studying in eligible fields of study at accredited universities inside or outside of their home countries are eligible to apply.
  • Full-time faculty members of universities who have at least a master’s degree and are currently teaching at universities in their home countries are also eligible to apply.

Eligible field: 

  • any field of social science and humanities is eligible for this award, but projects in addressing the social issues in the following areas are given priority: Defense against rising authoritarianism, Sustainable development, climate change, information democracy, economic justice, and work right, addressing the impact of Coronavirus pandemic on their home country.

Selection criteria: 

The Open Society will select the Civil Society Scholar award Learueats on a merit basis considering the following criteria :

  • academic excellence
  • the relevance of the project to the development of open society in the applicants home country
