This governmental scholarship promotes mutual understanding, collaboration, and exchange between China and other countries and organizations in various fields.

Candidates who wish to pursue their Bachelor’s and master’s degree studies in China should apply for CGS-Silk Road Program via the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) website and Nanjing University application portal. The code for Nanjing University is 10284, with the scholarship category of Type B.

For many years, the Chinese Government has offered several scholarship programs to support and sponsor international students, academics, and teachers with their studies and research in Chinese universities. Benefits of the CGS-Silk Road Program

The CGS-Silk Road Program at Nanjing University will cover the following expenses for the academy year 2023:

  • Tuition fee waiver
  • Free on-campus accommodation
  • Health insurance of RMB 800/year
  • Monthly living stipend of RMB 2,500 for Bachelor’s students and RMB 3,000 for Master’s students.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should fulfill the following requirements to apply for the CGS-Silk Road Program:

  • Applicants should not be citizens of China;
  • Hold the nationality of countries listed in the 64 countries along the Belt and Road;
  • Be in good health condition;
  • The age limit for Bachelor’s applicants is between 18 and 25, and the age limit for Master’s applicants is 35.
  • Bachelor’s degree applicants should provide a high school certificate, and Master’s degree applicants should provide a Bachelor’s degree;
  • Recipients of any Chinese Scholarship or funding (2023-2024) are not eligible for CGS-Silk Road Program at Nanjing University;
  • Meet admission requirements for the Bachelors of Chinese Language-Business Chinese: HSK level 5 and for graduation: HSK level 6;
  • Meet admission requirements for the masters of Information Resources Management: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85, TOEFL Essentials 9, or Duolingo 100 and graduation requirement: HSK level 3

Required Materials

The documents below, either in English or Chinese, are compulsory for the CGS-Silk Road Program. Applicants should provide correct and complete information:

  • Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form (downloadable from the CSC system)
  • Notarized Highest Diploma with English or Chinese notarized translation for none Chinese or English documents;
  • Transcripts with English or Chinese translation for none Chinese or English documents;
  • Two Recommendation Letters from high school teachers or associate professors;
  • Physical Examination Record obtained within six months;
  • HSK, TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo for the applicants mentioned above;
  • Personal statement for Master’s applicants and motivation letter for Bachelor’s students;
  • None-criminal record certificate obtained within the last six months;
  • Parental consent for applicants under the age of 18 signed by their parent or legal guardian in China;
  • The first page of the applicant’s valid passport;
  • List of published papers in professional or scientific journals and abstracts of articles or representative papers (optional)

How to Apply for the CGS-Silk Road Program?

To apply for CGS-Silk Road Program at Nanjing University, applicants should make two online applications as follows:

  1. One application on the CSC website by following these steps:
  • Sign up and apply at the CSC website.
  • Please enter 10284 for Agency Number, and for Program Type, please choose B in the application form.
  • Click the “submit ” button.
  • Finally, download the application form.
  1. Make another application at NJU’s China International Student Service System as follows:

After online application submission, applicants will receive feedback on the initial review within three workdays. Applicants receiving resubmit notices, please re-upload the documents correctly by the application deadline.

After initial review, successful applications will go through the further assessment. The relevant school or department will conduct assessments in April and May 2023.

During the further assessment, the Department of Chinese Language may arrange long-distance written and oral tests for the Bachelor’s program applicants. Please check the email inbox and application dashboard during the process for updates from Nanjing University.
