Opportunity Description

Applications are open for the Call for Code Global Challenge 2023 for developers and problem solvers. The Call for Code calls on teams of developers and problem solvers to develop tech solutions that leverage International Business Machines (IBM) Artificial Intelligence (AI)/ IBM AI technologies to address specific global sustainability problems in unique and clear ways.

By participating in the Global Challenge, entrants can win prizes and receive implementation support. Furthermore, they will gain skills in emerging tech like Artificial Intelligence and machine learning and contribute to projects with the potential to help the planet.

Entrants’ Global Challenge solution must address one of the diverse challenges of sustainability:

  • Improve the capability to measure, analyze, or take key action on carbon emissions
  • Improve access to consistent and affordable clean energy
  • Improve supply chain transparency to bring accurate visibility to sustainability challenges where they arise.
  • Address water scarcity and quality issues.
  • Reduce the volume and demand for materials, creating the biggest waste footprint, including plastics, food, textiles, and electronics, and encourage reuse or recycling opportunities.
  • Build effective ways to promote, protect, and preserve biodiversity quantifiably.
  • Reduce global food insecurity by including improvements to distribution or sustainable farming practices.

Call for Code is the largest tech-for-good initiative of its kind, entering its sixth year. Call for Code invites developers and problem-solvers from universities, enterprises, and startups worldwide to build and contribute to innovative technology solutions for addressing social and humanitarian issues. They also ensure the implementation of top solutions to make a real difference.

Prizes and Benefits

The 2023 Call for Code Global Challenge total funding is up to USD 1.4M with multiple rounds. Teams can compete for Challenge Round prizes (Round Four). At the end of the year, the winning teams from all Challenge Rounds will compete for Grand Prizes.

Each Round Challenge Prize Winners:

  • Developer teams: USD 10,000
  • Startup/Independent Software Vendor (ISV) teams: USD 10,000
  • University teams
  1. 1st place: USD 10,000
  2. 2nd place: USD 5,000
  3. 3rd place: USD 3,000

Grand Prize Winners:

  • Developer team: USD 50,000 plus the following:
  1. Personalized IBM AI discussion
  2. IBM executive meeting
  3. Open-source support from The Linux Foundation
  • Startup/Independent Software Vendor (ISV) team: USD 50,000 plus:
  1. Personalized IBM AI discussion
  2. Assigned IBM mentor
  • University team: USD 50,000 and $30,000 grant for university, plus:
  1. IBM job opportunities
  2. Assigned IBM mentor
  3. Open-source support from The Linux Foundation

The following entrant can apply for the 2023 Call for Code Global Challenge. Please note that you can build a great team in many ways. Remember that the most successful teams gather diverse skill sets to design unique and impactful solutions. All team leaders should consider problem-solvers with varied experience when assembling your team, such as:

  • Builders: Builders are the tech masterminds of your team. They are methodical, digital-obsessed teammate who brings the technical know-how to help ground the solution in what’s possible.
  • Designers: Designers are your UX experts, ensuring the solution is user-friendly and visually appealing. These teammates bring creative vision to technical problem-solving.
  • Communicators: Your team’s calculating operator is essential to articulate the problem and succinctly define how the solution can make a difference in a unique, profound, and consumable way.
  • Humanitarians: Philanthropic thinkers who understand complex problems truly humanly and are committed to finding a solution to make a demonstrable difference. This inspirational teammate considers the communities in need while thinking like the individual user.

The judges will score each submission based on the criteria below with a minimum score of 0 to 20 points, with the final score being the average of the judges’ scores.
