Opportunity Description

Central Asian Desert Initiative (CADI) provides senior scientists committed to a career in their home country with a fellowship to undertake a project related to CADI project aims and their country of origin focusing on the increase of sustainability or improvement of livelihoods in the region. The purpose of CADI Fellowship is to contribute in the generation, usage and spreading of knowledge on ecosystem services, biodiversity, and conservation status and land use of temperate deserts in Central Asia.

Fellowship start date: 1 October, 2018

Location: Greifswald (Germany), Michael Succow Foundation


  • 1000 € Monthly allowance for 12 months
  • 750 € allowance to cover One-time travel costs
  • 2000 € for Field and laboratory equipment upon approval
  • Individual supervision
  • Participation into an international network of scientists and practitioners
  • Research publication in a peer international journal


  • Post graduate scientists having nationality and resident in one of the eligible countries: China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
  • Have at least three years of professional experience
  • Not more than 40 years old
  • A detailed research plan and an outline of the methodology and explaining why your research is distinct and related to CADI aims (max. 1200 words)

Necessary documents:

  • CV
  • University certificate in Biology, Geography, Agriculture, Silviculture, Landscape Planning, Nature Conservation, Environmental Policy, Environmental Law or other fields relevant to temperate deserts
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Career related certificates
  • Publications Reference list
  • Confirmation of application by current employer
  • Upper-intermediate English language proficiency proof
  • Passport scanned copy

Selection criteria:

  • Relation for the implementation of CADI aims and for their home country
  • Originality of the research topic and the methodology
  • Possible implementation in the given period
  • A balanced distribution of countries and regions and gender
  • Scientific background of the participants
