Opportunity Description

The Harvard Global Health Institute, in partnership with the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, offers a two-year Burke Climate and Health Fellowship. Qualified research fellows, post-doctoral scholars, and early career talents pursuing scholarly research at the intersection of climate change and global health are eligible to apply for this opportunity. All fellows will work closely with a Harvard faculty mentor throughout the Fellowship program. They will work in any school or department on their proposed research project.

By participating in this fellowship program, awardees will receive a salary of $75,000 annually for up to two years. This amount is to support scholarships related to climate and health.

Climate and Health Fellows will be vital to the Harvard and Salata Institute during their Fellowship. They will participate in cross-University engagements on climate change.

Burke Climate and Health Fellowship will fund two fellows joining the 2024 cohort. All fellows can stay at The Harvard Global Health Institute and the Salata Institute. Additionally, the fellows will build a community of people focusing on climate change and its effects.

Benefits of Burke Climate and Health Fellowship

Fellows will benefit from the following:

Burke Climate and Health Fellowship Criteria

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Domestic and foreign institutions are welcome to apply for the Burke Climate and Health Fellowship;
  • Non-US citizens with permission to work in the U.S. are eligible to apply;
  • Proposed research projects must focus on climate and health;
  • Candidates should hold a doctoral degree or equivalent in the fields of medicine, public health, environmental health, climate science, epidemiology, or economics;
  • Candidates can be ideally research fellows, post-doctoral fellows, or are within the first five years of a faculty position at their university;
  • Assure a commitment from one Harvard faculty member to serve as a research mentor;
  • Commit a minimum 75% FTE effort to complete their research for the 2-year program;
  • Demonstrate experiences in scholarly research, such as policy briefs or publications of peer-reviewed manuscripts as part of their application;
  • Talents in disciplines other than health and life sciences are also eligible to apply as long as the work falls within global health.

Also, fellows are responsible for the following:

  • Participate in relevant scheduled events of the Institutes.
  • Participate in bi-weekly fellow dinners and other HUCE scheduled activities of Harvard University Center for the Environment (HUCE) throughout the year.
  • Submit a scholarly paper and annual progress report to the Institutes.
  • Deliver research findings and accomplishments from the Burke Fellowship at the end of the program.
  • Serve in the Global Health Speaker seminar series as a Pathways. This event is a 1-hour virtual seminar series for interested undergraduate students.
  • Acknowledge HGHI Burke’s findings in all award letters, event communications, presentations, and publications.
  • Work as a reviewer for future applicants to the Fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria for Harvard Faculty Sponsoring Mentor

The sponsoring mentor should fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be a Harvard faculty member and hold a Ph.D. or M.D.;
  • Demonstrate proficiency to support the applicant’s area of research;
  • Submit a letter of support with a maximum of two pages in length to the selection committee;
  • The Harvard department sponsoring mentors must administratively credential and house their mentee;
  • Applicants and the Mentors must provide a letter from the head of the academic department acknowledging that indirect costs are not covered;
  • The mentor should promise at least 75% of protected time for their mentee’s research during the 2-year program.
