Opportunity Description

The Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Prize for War Correspondents applications is open to international journalists who reports in conflict zone or topic. This Award is an initiative from Bayeux city, Departmental Council of Calvados, and Normandy region in France and a Praise for Freedom and Democracy that awarded annually since 1994.

Normandy Award’s primary aim is to pay tribute to journalists and war correspondents who work in dangerous conditions to provide free, democratic information. The event rewards a report on a conflict situation, its impacts on civilian populations, or a news item considering the defense of individual freedoms and democracy.

The prize has two categories: journalists or photographers working for media or agencies and professional journalists and photographers working as freelancers.

There are totally five special prizes an amount of €7,000 each. This amount will be for one prize per category in Television, Radio, Written Press, Photo, and Grand Format Television. Additionally, five special awards will be available called the Secondary School Students’ Prize in television, the General Public Prize in photography, the Ouest-France-Jean Marin Prize for written press, the Young Reporter’s Prize, and the video image prize. Furthermore, each of these prizes will comprise a trophy.

Benefits of the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Prize

There are different types of prizes for different categories, as follows:

Seven International Jury Prizes:

  • Written Press Prize offered from the Calvados Department with the total amount of €7000.
  • Television Prize with the sponsorship of Amnesty International with a total amount of €7000
  • Radio Prize from the D-Day Landing Committee totalling €7000.
  • Photo Prize offered by Nikon with the total amount of €7000.
  • Grand format Television Prize by International Crisis Group total value of €7000.
  • Young reporter Prize from Crédit Agricole Normandie comprises a total €3000.
  • Video image Prize by France 24, Arte, and France Televisions with the total amount of €3000.

Three Special Prizes:

  • The Ouest-France – Jean Marin Prize for the written press with a total amount of €4000
  • The Public Prize for photo reports with the Agency Française de Development sponsorship, totaling €3000.
  • The Normandy Region Secondary School Students’ Prize for television reports comprising €3000.

Obligations for Specific Contents Per Category

The reports must be in French, and those in other languages other than French should have a translation specified as follow:

Written Press:

  • The Application should be an article or a series of one to five articles on the same subject. The Organiser may accept up to six articles in a series if relevant to the application.
  • The reporter must have published the report on a media in paper format or on a media website.
  • If the reporter has not published the report by the application deadline, they should submit proof of application. The deadline for submitting the proof of publication is before 1 August 2023.
  • The submitted report must be identical to the published article.
  • Candidate should submit the following to the Organiser:
  1. A PDF of the final publication (magazine, daily, or Internet page)
  2. The article in a Word document
  3. For reports that are not in French, a translation in French is in a Word document.

Photo:

The application should contain a single report of 8 to 15 photos in digital files (CDs). No matter whether the reporter has published this report.

The application package submitted to the Organiser should contain the following:

  • A link, CD, or USB key that contains the report.
  • The photos’ captions must be in French in a Word document.
  • Photo reports should preserve the image’s authenticity, and the Organiser will ask the selected journalists for the source files (RAW).

Radio:

  • The candidate should submit a single report for approximately 1 to 6 minutes.
  • The reporter must have broadcast the report on air or on a media website. If necessary, please write down the media company name, contact details, and the date and time of the broadcast.
  • The report must be identical to the broadcast piece.
  • Please submit the following to the Organiser:
    • A link for downloading the report or a CD or USB key if the submission is by mail.
    • Also, attach the translations of the reports in a language other than French in a Word document.

Television Category of Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Prize:

  • The candidate should submit a single report with a length of approximately 1 minute 30 seconds and 6 minutes 30 seconds.
  • The reporter must have broadcast the report on air or on a media website. If necessary, please write down the media company’s name and contact details and the broadcast date and time.
  • The report must be identical to the broadcast piece.
  • Please submit the following to the Organiser:
    • A link for downloading the report or a CD or USB key if the submission is by mail.
    • Also, attach the translations of the reports in a language other than French in a Word document.

Grand Format Television:

  • The candidate should submit a single report for approximately 6 minutes, 30 seconds, and 30 minutes.
  • The reporter must have broadcast the report on air or on a media website. If necessary, please write down the media company’s name and contact details and the broadcast date and time.
  • The report must be identical to the broadcast piece.
  • Please submit the following to the Organiser:
    • A link for downloading the report or a CD or USB key if the submission is by mail.
    • Also, attach the translations of the reports in a language other than French in a Word document.

The Website of the Media

  • The organizer exclusively considers the media as an organ of the press or a news agency.
  • In the case of litigation, the applicant should present proof of broadcasting the submitted report.
  • The Organiser has the right to reject a report that would not perform the abovementioned conditions.

  • Applicant should submit five to fifteen lines outlining report production. It might include conditions before, during, and after the report, challenges, etcetera.)
