Opportunity Description
The UNESCO Madanjeet Center for South Asia Forestry Studies (UMCSAFS) at Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment Research (UWICER), Bumthang, Bhutan has announced the Madanjeet Singh scholarships for four-year Bachelor degree program in Forestry and two-year Master’s degree program in Natural Resources Management for the 2020 academic year. The programs shall be undertaken at the College of Natural Resources (CNR), the Royal University of Bhutan from July 2020 to July 2024 and 2022 respectively.

Course level: both bachelor’s & master’s levels
Note: All citizens of eight SAARC countries are eligible to apply as per the conditions set forth below.

- Monthly stipend of Nu. 12,000 for the Bachelor’s degree
- Establishment grant of 16,000 for international students
- Research grant for thesis write-up for both courses
- In-country trip as per Bhutan’s existing rate (NU. 500 per day while on travel and 50% if it goes beyond one month)
Eligibility criteria for Bachelor’s degree include:
- Having passed class xii with a minimum of 55% in English and generally aggregate of 60% (English, Biology, and two other subjects) or nested diploma in forestry
- Having spoken and written English fluency
- Producing English language competency certificates from recognized institutions (not certainly international ones)
- Copy of passport (for international students)
- Being under 35 years of age and affording to submit a birth certificate plus other relevant documents
Applicants applying for a master’s degree must fulfill these criteria:
- Having completed a BSc degree at a recognized university in forestry, environment, or science fields.
- Having at least secured 55% in each subject and an overall GPA of 60%
- A copy of valid Citizenship card
- Copy of passport (for international students)
- A copy of degree certificate from a prestigious university
- Security clearance certificate
- No Objection Certificate from an employer if employed
- Having spoken and written English fluency
- Producing English language competency certificates from recognized institutions (not certainly international ones)
- Submitting medical fitness certificate from reputable government hospitals of the respective countries
- Audit clearance certificate if employed anywhere
- Two recent passport size photographs
Note: Any applicant applying for Masters in Natural Resources Management has to submit the attached application form and Research Proposal sample (mandatory) along with the other needed documents.
Selection process
- South Asia Foundation (SAF) office in above-mentioned country shall choose one candidate each based on the eligibility criteria mentioned herein and the name of the chosen candidate from each SAARC country has to be given to the office of the Program Director, Madanjeet Center for South Asia Forestry Studies, latest by March 09, 2020through SAF offices in respective country. If the documents are to be sent via e-mail, it should be sent to dendupt@uwice.gov.bt and copy to cwangmo@uwice.gov.bt.
- The final assessment of the selected candidate shall take place together by a team of the committee from the College of Natural Resources and Madanjeet Center for South Asia Forestry Studies. There will be an interview through skype with the candidates for the final selection.
- Based on the final evaluation, the candidates may or may not be accepted into the program if the respective SAF office failed to pursue the set eligibility criteria.
- The UMCSAFS and CNR reserves the right of acceptance or rejection of candidates nominated by SAARC countries into the programs offered.
- The letter of acceptance or rejection into the scholarship program will be sent to the respective SAF office and to the candidate latest by March 20, 2020, via e-mail or telephone calls.
- All travel documents of the successful student should be given the UMCSAFS office no later than June 30, 2020, to process for travel and other necessary arrangements.

Applicants wishing to apply for this scholarship should submit the following documents to the South Asia Foundation (SAF) offices in their respective countries.
- Class XII Certificate/Nested Diploma in Forestry
- Class XII Transcript/Marksheet
- Bachelor’s degree certificate from a recognized university (only for masters applicants)
- English Language Proficiency Certificates
- A copy of Citizenship ID card and valid passport
- Security clearance certificate from related countries
- Medical fitness certificate from reliable government hospital of respective countries
- Birth Certificate

A copy of documents for the chosen candidate should be sent to the office of SAF Bhutan for evaluation and acceptance into the program. All the accepted candidates should deliver original documents at the time of admission at College of Natural Resources, Lobesa, Bhutan
