Introduction

The Ockenden International Prizes 2023 are now accepting applications. Ockenden International, which has been working for and with refugees for over 70 years, has launched its 11th annual competition to find and reward the most effective self-sufficiency projects for refugees and/or displaced people.
Ockenden International has assisted refugees and internally displaced people all over the world. They believe that all refugees and displaced people have the right to live in dignity and to be assisted in their efforts to achieve self-sufficiency. They recognize that self-sufficiency can be promoted in a variety of ways, and they strive to make their support similarly adaptable.

Prize Value:

Each of the four successful organizations will receive GBP 25,000.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Non-profit organizations are welcome to enter their own projects or nominate projects managed by non-profit partners or affiliated organizations.
  • Projects can be led or have a high level of participation from project participants.

  • Prizes will be given to projects that encourage self-reliance among refugees and/or displaced people.

Entry Rules:

  • Organizations may only submit one entry per prize year. Unsuccessful Organizations are encouraged to reapply in following years.
  • Previous winners are barred from competing for three years.
  • The project must benefit refugees and/or displaced people while emphasizing self-sufficiency. The project’s primary goal must be to assist refugees and/or displaced people in need, rather than to provide an ancillary benefit.
  • The organization must be able to demonstrate that the project was successful by providing measurable evidence of positive outcomes.
  • The project entered must have been operational before March 1, 2022.
  • Entrants must submit a copy of their organization’s most recent audited financial statements with their application. Entrants will be required to provide other evidence of sound financial governance if audited accounts are not available.
  • Organizations must have high financial and administrative governance standards.
  • Entrants may be asked to provide references or other evidence of the project’s financial and administrative governance during the short-listing process. Due diligence on bank accounts nominated by entrants for the receipt of prize money may be included.
  • Referees for all short-listed applicants will be requested to provide references and any other supporting documentation for the organization’s submitted or proposed project.
  • All participants are required to nominate two referees, who must be independent, qualified outside observers.
  • Only a bank account in the organization’s name will receive prize money. Prize money will never be transferred to a personal bank account. Any bank or transfer fees will not be covered by Ockenden International.
  • Ockenden International is required to ensure that prize money is used by a winning organization for charitable purposes, and prize money may only be used to assist refugees and/or displaced people in need. In general, it is expected that prize money will be applied to the project mentioned in the entry, to its expansion, or to a project of a similar nature that the organization will undertake in the future.
  • In order for Ockenden International to share information about the projects and the use of the winnings on its website and in other communications, prize winners will be required to provide information.
  • No further discussion will be had regarding the jury’s decision, which is final.
  • The Ockenden International Prizes organization agrees to abide by these rules by submitting an entry.

Evaluation

The judging will take place based on the below criteria.

  • Projects that advance self-reliance among migrants and/or displaced people.
  • These may be projects run by or have a high level of involvement from displaced people themselves, projects delivering education, legal assistance, and/or livelihood assistance; or any other programs that help refugees and/or displaced people build sustainable, independent lives.
  • Projects with high effectiveness in improving the lives of refugees.
  • Projects that have created real change in the lives of refugees and/or displaced people.
  • Effective initiatives, with measurable evidence of outcomes.

Organizations can make entries via the Online Entry Form. The project should be the full focus of the entry. If you do not have a stable and adequate connection to the Internet, download the PDF version of the Entry Form, fill in block letters, print, and post it to the following address to be received no later than the deadline. All entries, as well as supporting documentation such as financials and accounts, must be written in English.
